Gentry Fire Tower Group Site 2019

Gentry Group Campground is located within the Apache-Sitgraves National Forest near Black Canyon Lake.

General directions from Mesa/Tempe areas; take AZ-87 north to Payson. In Payson, turn east onto AZ-260 todwards Forest Lakes. Continue driving past Forest Lakes about 3 miles looking for Mogollon Rim Road, near the top of a long upgrade hill. Turn south onto Mogollon Rim Road which is a gravel, dusty, somewhat maintained National Forest Road. Continue about 2.5 miles to Black Canyon Lake Camp Grounds where the road splits (DO NOT take the left fork) and continue "stright" (DO NOT turn onto Black Canyon Lake Rd). Continue another 3-4 miles on Mogollon Rim Road to the Gentry Fire Tower and Group Site Camp Grounds on left. The Fire Tower may be visuable above the trees. There was a fire several days after our 2017 Field Day, that started near Black Canyon and burned thru the valley and up to the Gentry Fire Tower. The camp grounds were not damaged during this fire, but the surrounding area was cleared. The camp ground is still very picturisque overlooking Black Canyon Lake.

MARCA Operating Information for 2019 ARRL Field Day

Location: see Field Day Map or click here.

Field Day activities are from Friday, June 21st thru Sunday, Jun 23rd 2019.

Equipment & antenna setup will start on Friday afternoon-ish (June 21st) and finish on Saturday morning-ish (June 22nd).

MARCA will be operating as a class 2A field day station. Class 2A allows 2 regular stations plus a GOTA station, a vhf station, 6 meter station, and satellite station. We will operate phone, cw and digital (psk and others). There will be a selection of radio types, K3, KX3, ICOM, Kenwood, .... analog, digital, and SDRs.

This year we will be adding something new, FT8.Friday Dinner is mostly fend for yourself. Typically, some of us will drive into Forest Lakes for dinner at someplace.

Don Aldridge is the official CW "copier" of the ARRL Bulletin. All interested in participating in this 30 minute activity are Welcome. Don will post the time of this event at the Vistiors table.

Friday's dinner is typically a DIY since everyone will be at a different hunger state. However, many will group hike or drive into Forest Lakes and feast at a local diner.

Field Day on the air operations begins at 11:00 am Saturday, June 22nd and continues for a 24 hour period until Sunday, June 23rd. There will be a Visitor Information table with schedule of events, guest  visitor book, Amateur Radio information, and MARCA information.

A training class with an interesting hands-on project is being planned. The project is open to all attendees. The class is Saturday and time will be announced and posted at the Visitor Information table.  Duration is 90 minutes.

A MARCA sponsored BBQ is planned for Saturday night. (bbq, hot-dogs with the “fixins”, beans, chips and soda). We also are planning on a large stack of pancakes, sausagues, and eggs on both Saturday and Sunday mornings. You should provide all of your other meals, snacks, drinks, water, etc.

Sunday, after the last Field Day contact is logged, Lunch of sandwiches and left overs is planned.

After Sunday Lunch, we will tear down the Field Day stations and antennas. Pack equipment into vehicles. The camp site is cleaned up and we're ready to hit the road back to the “cool” valley mid-ish Sunday afternoon.

There is lots of camping space in and around the trees, so bring tent or motor home, sleeping bags and your normal “camping” equipment. If roughing it isn't your style, there is a small motel at Forest Lakes, which is close by. Also, a large group of the FD participants typically visit a local restaurant for a Friday night all-you-can-eat fish fry.

New hams, those interested in learning about Amateur Radio, all other hams, seasoned hams, and of course families & friends are welcome. If you would like to participate, please email one of the committee members (listed below) with the number of people in your party, the number of hams and your approximate arrival time. Also, let us know if you are interested in bringing a rig to use or share or other equipment. Other equipment might be headphones, your favorite key or paddle, coax with PL259s etc. This year, the club has aquired sufficient deep cycle 12 volt batteries to operate all Field Day stations during contest period.

Join us for this event filled weekend or just come up for the Saturday operations and evening bbq.
